Poets rock horns in Blantyre gathering

It’s Chilembwe Day Friday – a day when Malawians celebrate the life of one of its heroes John Chilembwe.

With musicians taking a break and still shaking off the dust of 2015, poets are ready for 2016 starting off with what is dubbed Ndakatulo 2016 at Chrichi Purpose Gardens behind Chitawira Filling Station in Blantyre Friday.

Poets were on a high in 2015 and their gatherings pulled huge audiences but the question is how will they fair in 2016?

Probably the journey starts today on Chilembwe Day when they will once again take to the stage to show their verve.

Despite pulling massive audiences, some quarters have however hit at some poets saying they are going out of bounds mistaking poetry for jokes.

Some of the poets set to perform include poet of the moment Robert Chiwamba, who launched his album titled Kwa Mai Chiwamba last year, Raphael Sitima, Joseph Madzedze, Sylvester Kalizang’oma, who made history launching a DVD of his Unkalindanji Moyo album and Samuel Joseph.

Apart from poets, people will also have time to be treated to a dish of mimics from presidential mimickers in Aunt Geti real name Kenwood Sambalika, who mimics former president Joyce Banda and Atcheya (Frank Naligonje) who imitates former president Bakili Muluzi.

The other is Mr Malawi (Snowden Tembo) mimicker of late Bingu wa Mutharika.

There will also be a music performance from Lucky Stars Band well known for their hit ‘Chinafuna M’bale.’

Chrichi Gardens Events Manager Wales Chakukuma said this is another platform for family entertainment.

“This being Chilembwe Day, we felt people can come to Chrichi and enjoy poetry. This is a family entertainment,” said Chakukuma.
