Poisonous tubers kill mother, two daughters

By Foster Benjamini:
A mother and her two daughters have died in Chikwawa district after eating poisonous wild tubers.
The three died on Friday in Feston Village, Traditional Authority Maseya.
Chikwawa Police spokesperson, Dickson Matemba, confirmed the deaths of Cecelia Frank, 38, and her two daughters aged five and seven years.
He said the three had prepared a meal of wild tubers locally known as zikhawo which resemble yams.
“They started vomiting soon after consuming poisonous tubers which they thought were yams. They were taken to Mfera Health Centre but unfortunately they didn’t make it,” Matemba said.
He disclosed that an autopsy indicated poisoning as the cause of death.
Wild tubers are said to contain toxic substances which lead to dizziness, vomiting and even death.
