Police in the Northern Region have recovered suspected stolen property worth K10 million from Mchengatuba Township in Mzuzu, leading to the arrest of four people.
Northern Region Police Public Relations Officer Maurice Chapola said the police received a tip that the suspects are keeping property suspected to be stolen.
“We noticed that cases of theft were increasing and upon approaching the communities, we were tipped that some people are keeping suspected stolen property. We conducted serious investigations and later we went straight to the houses and made the arrests as well as recovering the property worth K10 million,” Chapola said.
He said the suspects will appear before court soon to answer a charge of receiving stolen property as the searching is also extended to other Townships.
In a related development, the police in the region have impounded over 50 vehicles during a sweeping exercise and the vehicles violated Road Traffic Act.
The most affected vehicles are those that were not registered to do business but they were operating illegally.
