Police in Rumphi, Thursday, arrested 65 Ethiopian illegal immigrants at Luzi Trading Centre in Mzimba for illegal entry into Malawi.
Rumphi Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Khamisi, said the immigrants were in a Fuso Fighter van registration number KA 7279 travelling from Karonga heading towards Mzuzu on the M1 Road.
He said the police elected an ad hoc roadblock at the trading centre following a tip-off from a well-wisher.
“The immigrants failed to produce travelling documents and were arrested,” Khamisi said.
He said the immigrants will soon appear before a court of law to answer charges of entering the country without travelling documents while the driver currently at large will answer charges of aiding illegal immigrants.
“Meantime, we are appealing to people to avoid aiding illegal immigrants to enter the country if we are to maintain peace and security in the country,” he said.
