Police arrest DPP’s David Kambalame

Police in Lilongwe Thursday arrested Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Governor for the Central Region, David Kambalame over assault charges.

National Police Headquarters, Public Relations Officer, James Kadadzera confirmed the development.

Kadadzera said Kambalame is being accused of assaulting Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General, Eisenhower Mkaka on April 11 this year at Lilongwe Police Station.

Kadadzera said Kambalame has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and with conduct at a police station.

“He will appear before court when case files are ready. The suspect has since been granted police bail,” Kadadzera said.

On the said date, Mkaka is said to have gone to Central Region Police Headquaters in Lilongwe’s Area 3 to find out why the law enforcers had apprehended one of MCP followers, Absalom Kunkhongo, who went on an operation to stop some unscrupulous people who were said to be buying national identity cards in Lilongwe South East Constituency.

Kunkhongo was detained at Bunda Roadblock on his return from the operation before being taken to Area 3 police where Mkaka was assalted when he went to see him.

Kambalame becomes the second DPP official to be arrested this week after the police in Blantyre on Tuesday arrested DPP councillor for Nthandizi Ward, Isaac Jomo Osman, over allegations of theft and malicious damage.

The Blantyre Magistrate’s Court yesterday granted bail to Osman.
