Malawi Police Service has detained an eight-seater private jet which landed at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe on Friday.

The jet is the one Vice President Saulos Chilima, who is also UTM presidential candidate in the May 21 Tripartite Elections, boarded to Likoma Island to campaign.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said the jet also flew to Mzuzu before Likoma Island.

Kadadzera said the plane number ZS-SDS owned by Fair Aviation has been detained due to suscipicious activities of its crew members and passengers.

He said the police were investigating the matter in interest of national security.

“Government has booked two pilots of the suscipicious plane at a local hotel as they wait for the Malawi Police Service and Civil Aviation authorities to complete investigations,” he said.

The detention of the jet comes against the backdrop of sentiments made by President Peter Mutharika during a political campaign rally that a certain presidential candidate has hired a jet to be used in “rigging elections.”
