Police hunt for Dzalanyama Forest volunteer killers
By Imam Wali:
Police in Dedza District are still hunting for people who killed a volunteer working in Dzalanyama Forest, publicist Cassim Manda has said.
“The victim, 32-year-old Widson Samuel from Lozani Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chilikumwendo, in the district was killed on July 20.
Advertisement“What happened is that he, and 13 colleagues, were on routine patrols inside Dzalanyama Forest when they encountered 15 charcoal-makers carrying bags of charcoal on bicycles. The volunteers and the attackers, who were armed with pangas and axes, confronted each other, leading to the death of Samuel,” he said.
Manda called on community members to be patient as they were working around the clock to apprehend the culprits.
The suspects also injured Chiyerekezo Mainala, who is admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital.
Samuel and the other volunteers were trained by Japanese International Cooperation Agency as community volunteers to protect trees in Dzalanyama Forest.
