Police hunt for Masm official

Police in Blantyre have launched a manhunt for Chief Commercial Officer of Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Masm), Andrew Ngomwa, who allegedly defiled his niece who is less than 16 years old.

According to Blantyre Police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi, the girl’s mother filed a report on September 21 at the police station in which she complained that Ngomwa had been defiling the child.

“We received a complaint on September 21, this year from the girl’s mother alleging that her daughter had been defiled by Andrew Ngomwa. Thereafter, the police took the girl to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre where medical practitioners confirmed that she had indeed been defiled.

“As such, Blantyre Police opened a rape case against Ngomwa and have since been looking for him. We are taking the necessary procedures to ensure that we find him. Once we are successful, we will take the matter to court,” Nkhwazi said.

Nkhwazi further dismissed reports that Ngomwa was apprehended on the run, by police in Mozambique.

“The inspection that was carried out by the medical practitioners indicates that he had been sleeping with her during the period of July to August this year and he has impregnated her,” he said.

Meanwhile, Masm in a statement said was aware that police were looking for Ngomwa who is, currently, on leave.

The statement further indicates Masm has advised him to clear himself with authorities as required.
