By Macdonald Thom:

Police officers Tuesday invaded Malawi Congress Party (MCP) headquarters in Lilongwe, where they fired teargas and deflated tyres of vehicles parked there.

It all started when one car the members were using went out to refuel and the police officers started chasing it.

Although the car managed to get into the headquarters’ premises, the party’s national organising secretary, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, said it was at that point police officers started throwing teargas canisters.

The Daily Times crew saw over 50 canisters on the premises.

Chiponda said the members just camped at the party’s headquarters to reflect on the outcome of the elections. She said it was sad that police officers took such an action.

“We have been here because we are hurt. What has happened is unbelievable because we know that we had won these elections. We know very well that our president Dr Lazarus Chakwera won these elections. We are crying; we said let us cry in our own compound. This is a private property. It belongs to Malawi Congress Party. You can even check at the Ministry of Lands. This property was left to us by our father and founder, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda. That is why we always come here; we sing our songs here,” she said.

She added: “Now the police have been camping outside our premises for the past three days. I think they were looking for a way to provoke us and they did that today.”

National Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, asked for more time to get exactly what happened.

about what exactly happened there. However, you may recall that the Inspector General [Rodney Jose] Tuesday [on Monday] appealed to all Malawians not to be involved in any form of political violence. He also said police officers will be deployed to all areas, maintaining law and order. He also said that all people perpetrating violence will be arrested and the law will take its course,” Kadadzera said.
