Police in Limbe on Saturday shot dead four people suspected to be hardcore criminals.
The raid took place following a tip-off that the alleged gang was somewhere around Shire Highlands Hotel in Limbe and was planning to break into a shop.
Limbe Police Spokesperson, Chifundo Kansunje, confirmed the incident.
She said as police invaded the place, one of the criminals was cornered and arrested.
Eventually, the other three suspects emerged and attempted to rescue their colleague.
“One of the suspects pulled out a pistol aiming to shoot, but was eventually shot down together with his friends.
“The fear was we could have lost life of an officer, because the suspects were very violent. In addition, one of the suspects wanted to grab a firearm from one of our men,” Kansunje said.
She said the suspects were using a Toyota Corolla vehicle with a fake registration number.
Kansunje said the operation was done by officers of criminal investigations department but denied mentioning the total number of officers who were involved in the operation for security reasons.
Three of the suspects have been identified as 31-year-old Kapisi Tembo from Mhango Village Traditional Authority (T/A) Tengani in Nsanje District, John Ntaja, aged 32, from Masato Village TA Changata in Thyolo district and 43-year-old Ephraim Mkandawire from Nkhongo Village TA Kanyenda in Nkhotakota district. The other is yet to be identified.
Meanwhile, one pistol and four bullets have been recovered.
