Police net three for vandalism
Police in Ndirande launched an operation early morning on Friday that led to the arrest of three people who were stealing batteries from Airtel Towers.
The three arrested suspects are Steve Khanyepa, 26, from Sondolo Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe, Zomba; Foster Namalopa, 24, of Mchenga Village, Traditional Authority Changata, Thyolo and John Cosmas, 28, from Masamba Village, Traditional Authority Mpama, Chiradzulu.
The police said the three are habitual offenders who have been stealing the batteries at different tower stations in the city and have been on the run for a long time. During the operation, the police recovered 48 batteries.
In an interview with The Daily Times on Friday, Officer-in-Charge for Ndirande Sub-Station McDonald Mazonga said they are still investigating the matter saying there are more people who are implicated in the matter.
“These towers have been abused by these thieves for a long time. These thieves have been disrupting network in the city because these towers need the batteries to function properly. This has been an on-going problem but we will work day and night to stop this practice,” said Mazonga who is Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Superintendent Master Nkhoma, who led the operation on Friday, appealed to people to report anyone who looks suspicious.
“Our job as the police is to investigate crime but we can do much better if the communities assist us by reporting anyone with suspicious behaviour. Most of the people who commit crimes are in our communities, therefore, it is the responsibility of everyone to make our communities crime-free by reporting anyone with suspicious behaviour,” Nkhoma said.
