Police in Lilongwe have recovered 11 vehicles that were stolen across the country between October and November this year.

The stolen vehicles had been painted differently and registration numbers changed.

Central West Region spokesperson Alfred Chimthere said drivers of the vehicles were drugged first.

“We are happy that we have found the suspects who were behind the theft of vehicles in the country. We have, so far, arrested three people in connection with the crime.

“We, as police, will continue to raise awareness among taxi drivers across the country on the need to protect themselves. It is advisable that taxi drivers should be moving as a team during the night,” Chimthere said.

One of the victims whose car was stolen, Thokozani Michael, said people that had offered to hire his car shared a drink with him.

“I, then, lost consciousness. They dragged me out of the car and sped off,” Michael said.

Chimthere identified the suspects as two Malawians— Chipiliro Witika, who comes from Zomba, and Patrick Pande, who comes from Dedza— and Nigerian Daniel Frank, who resides at Biwi in Lilongwe.
