Police recover stolen vehicles
Police in Zomba have recovered six vehicles that were stolen from Zomba-based Alexandra Car Hire Company in July this year.
Zomba Police Spokesperson, Patricia Sipiliano, said the vehicles were stolen when the suspect, Macdonald Chopi, approached the company owner Kennedy Mtamba to let them hire the vehicles to be used in a research project.
“Chopi told Mtamba, who is the owner of the vehicles, that he will be conducting a research in Lilongwe and he will need three lorries, two minibuses and one saloon, the agreement was that Chopi would use his own drivers at the time of the research, they also agreed that Chopi would be responsible for all the damages and risks and that payment of the vehicles would be made at the end of each month,” said Sipiliano.
But on August 14, police learnt that the vehicles had been sold to some people when the buyers went to the road traffic offices to change ownership of the vehicles.
“Road Traffic officers had to verify with the vehicle owner and that was when it was revealed that the vehicles were stolen, we also initiated investigations where we managed to arrest some two people involved to have taken part in the theft of the vehicles,” said Sipiliano.
Meanwhile, police are urging owners of car hire companies to have information about their clients as one way of protecting their property.
Chopi hails from Zazira Village in Traditional Authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu while Patrick Pandepande, aged 39 hails from Lobi Village in T/A Kachere in Dedza and Evelesi Mofolo, aged 40 comes from Kadyalunda Village in the area of T/A Sawali in Balaka.
