By Faith Kamtambe:

Police say they are facing challenges to identify five suspected thugs who, Thursday last week, raided Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) offices in Lilongwe, where a security guard was manhandled.

Lingadzi Police publicist, Gift Chitowe, said Wednesday police is struggling to apprehend the culprits because they are failing to track the vehicle which was used during the attack.

“As you know, the suspects were using a motor vehicle, IT 0811. Since we started our investigations, we have not tracked this vehicle and we have not found anyone who was involved,” he said.

Chitowe has also said anyone having information on the matter should alert police so that it can make headway with investigations.

“We are still conducting investigations [into the issue] in order to track down the suspects who were involved in the bombing of CHRR offices. As we are carrying out the investigations, we are pleading with members of the public who have information to come forward and give us that information so that these suspects should, once arrested, appear in court,” he said.

When the incident occurred, Human Rights Defenders Coalition Vice-Chairperson, Gift Trapence, insisted that he believes the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is behind the attack.

He added that they intend to report the matter to international bodies considering that, according to him, the police cannot act on the matter.

But DPP spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi, dismissed the claims.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees recently released a statement, encouraging authorities, including police, to swiftly act on the matter.
