Police on Tuesday evening had a rude wakening when an angry mob burnt down their vehicle that was serving Lingadzi Police at Mtsiriza in Lilongwe.
Twenty people have been arrested so far.
According to the police, angry people wanted to deal with a person they believed to have abducted another person in the same area.
National Police Spokesperson, James Kadadzera, confirmed the burning of the vehicle and arrest of 20 people, saying the suspects will be charged with different counts.
Kadadzera said a group of people mobbed a house of the person believed to have abducted the other person. He said the situation got worse when the police arrived at the scene to intervene as the angry people set ablaze the police vehicle claiming that they had come to rescue the abductor.
“The people wanted to deal with the person who they believed abducted another person. The police were called and rushed to bring order. But the people immediately set ablaze the police vehicle when the police arrived at the scene, because they wanted to deal with the situation on their own,” he said.
Kadadzera appealed to the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands and fighting the law enforcers.
“Members of the community have a role to play in ensuring security. What the people did at Mtsiriza is uncalled for as the people were in the forefront fighting the police,” he said.
