Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara and Sports Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda have made a joint appeal for support to football legends in the country.

Speaking after a match between the legends and members of Parliament (MPs) at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Tuesday night, Gotani Hara said the former Malawi National Football Team stars popularised football because of their immense talent.

“We need to make sure that we do not lose sight out of these legends. They made our football popular and we must do all we can to ensure that we take care of their needs. We need to find ways of ensuring that their welfare is taken care of.

“These are the people who made Malawi football shine. Let us support them so that they continue shinning to motivate youngsters,” Hara said.

Chimwendo Banda, who featured for the MPs, said it was high time the country started honouring its heroes.

“We need to make sure that we motivate the legends and also tap knowledge from them so that we develop our football. The legends have a big role to play in Malawi football,” Chimwendo Banda said.

Some of Parliament’s prominent players were Billy Kaunda, Alfred Jiya, Owen Chomanika, Arnold Kadzanja and Francis Phiso.

Football administrator Jim Kalua, who organised the match, hailed the government and other entities for supporting the legends.

“Since starting the initiative, we have received overwhelming support. Football unites people and we will continue organising such events,” Kalua said.

After the match, the MPs bought 32 copies of Kinnah Phiri’s book The Four-legged Wizard.

The parliamentarians bought each copy at a minimum of K50,000.

Lilongwe City Centre MP Alfred Jiya was the highest bidder during an auction of the book, buying a copy at K200,000.

National Unity Minister Timothy Mtambo also participated in the auction and bought the book at K100,000.

Phiri thanked the lawmakers for their support.

“I am humbled. I did not expect this kind of support,” he said.

The legends’ team, which won 4-2, comprised Young Chimodzi Senior, Gilbert Chirwa, Lawrence Waya, Phiri, Andrew Chikhosi, Leo Mpulula, Noel Kaole, James Kaniche, Charles Beni, Gabriel Chirwa, Davie Moya and James Mwenda.
