Politicians’ tendency of offering financial and material handouts to entice voters continues to thrive despite the presence of the 2018 Political Parties Act, which dictates against handouts in the country.
Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) Executive Director, Emma Kaliya, said there are indications that politicians continue to give handouts in the run up to the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.
Kaliya said this in Ntchisi South Constituency, where MHRRC and NGO Gender Coordination Network officials held a rally to drum up support for female parliamentary and Local Government candidates.
“Desist from the tendency of giving and receiving handouts because, once you are caught, you will be punished severely. The reality is that those who will report you to the authorities are either your opponents’ supporters or people within your own camp due to jealousy or misunderstandings. So, be very careful,” Kaliya told the gathering.
There are three female parliamentary candidates in Ntchisi South Constituency and four female Local Government candidates in Mbawala Ward, one of the wards in the constituency.
