South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Polokwane City’s Coach, Clinton Larsen, has lauded the defensive qualities of his new catch Chembezi Denis.

Larsen said he fell in love with the talent of the 23-year-old centre-back because he was experienced at the highest national team level with the Flames and is strong on the ball.

Chembezi, who spent some years with Be Forward Wanderers, has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the bottom-placed PSL side in a deal estimated at K10 million.

“Well, he is a central defender,” Larsen told Kick-Off website.

“Firstly, you know that is a problem area for us. Secondly, he is a Malawian international, he has played in the last two international qualifiers so he is a regular now in the national team.”

“So yes, he comes with strong defensive qualities. He is a strong defender; he enjoys his defending and I think we are, at this point, looking for strong defenders who can really block out opposition attacks, and that that is one of his qualities.

“But like I said, coming with international experience really would help us considering that we have currently got the two youngsters at centre-half, and we need a bit of experience.”

Chembezi played at Wizards FC, then in the TNM Super League, under the mentorship of Peter Mponda, who also made the cut in the PSL with Black Leopards before joining Santos.

Mponda described Chembezi as a top player who is physically very strong.

“He is good in the air and so comfortable on the ground. He is a modern type of a defender where coaches want to start play from the back. He uses both feet comfortably. He will suit the PSL easily. You look at defenders of top teams in the PSL, most of them can’t match the quality of Denis,” the Nyasa Big Bullets assistant coach said.

Former Polokwane striker Esau Kanyenda facilitated Chembezis’s transfer to Polokwane where he would be joined by forward Khuda Muyaba from Silver Strikers.

Muhammad Sulumba was, after Kanyenda quit Polokwane, the last Malawian to feature for the PSL side in 2018 but he hardly finished a season.

Muyaba and Chembezi have joined compatriots Gabadinho Mhango (Orlando Pirates), Robert Ng’ambi (Leopards), Limbikani Mzava (Highlands Park), Richard Mbulu and Gerald Phiri Junior (Baroka FC) in the PSL.
