Malawi Assamblies of God University (Magu) and Polytechnic were the biggest winners in the elite eight phase of the K62 million National Bank of Malawi Mo626 College Basketball tournament as they advanced to the semifinals in both the ladies’ and men’s categories.
Some 16 teams converged at Malawi University of Science and Technology on Saturday to fight for the elite four phase whose games will be played at Chancellor College (Chanco) in Zomba this Friday.
Magu and Poly were joined by MCA Lilongwe and Chanco in the men’s category whereas Zima and Bunda completed the ladies’ section line-up after excelling in group games.
Magu Team Manager, Wills Chioko, described the qualification as amazing, saying what excited him most was the two teams’ discipline.
“We always emphasise on discipline and hard work in the quest to achieve our goals. We are pleased that things are working according to plan and our sports revolution is on course. We will concentrate on improving players’ fitness levels ahead of the semifinals,” Chioko said.Advertisement
DMI Team Manager Rodney Mlauzi, whose team was booted out after losing to MCA Blantyre and Polytechnic, hailed his charges for putting up a good fight.
“The players delivered what they could under the circumstances. It is unfortunate that we faced stronger opponents, otherwise we could have made it. But it was a nice experience playing against top teams. We have learnt our lessons and we will improve in the next tournament,” Mlauzi said.
Winners of Friday’s matches will proceed to the finals which will be played at the same venue on Saturday.
