Portugal beckons Richard Mbulu

In a dramatic turn of events, Portuguese Second Division side, Sporting Club de Esmoriz, have reportedly offered Mafco’s FC’s temperamental striker, Richard Mbulu, an outright deal.

If the deal goes through, Mbulu, who is serving a season-long ban from cup games, could become a second Malawian footballer in Europe. Currently, the only Malawian in Europe is Cyprus-based Tawonga Chimodzi.

A source at Mafco yesterday confirmed that the joint TNM Super League leading scorer was on his way to Portugal.

“Other details for the deal remain with the MDF [Malawi Defence Force] headquarters. All protocols by the team were done. I am not disclosing any detail on behalf of the club until the deal goes through,” he said.

Mafco General Secretary, Duncan Limkomola, Sunday referred questions to Team Manager, Chawezi Ngwira, who reserved his comment.

MDF spokesperson, Paul Chiphwanya, Sunday confirmed the deal but asked to be called later in the week for more details.

Mbulu hit headlines recently when his involvement in scuffles on an eve of a Carlsberg Cup quarter-final game against Nyasa Big Bullets earned him a season-long ban from all football related activities.

However, on appeal, the ban was reduced to cup games only. Following the punishment, South Africa Premiership side, Baroka FC, dropped their interest in the striker.

Esmoriz is coached by Pedro Mendez and it was founded in 1932. Its home stadium is 2,500-seater Barrinha.
