Postponed game grosses K1.2 million
The TNM Super League match between Be Forward Wanderers and Mzuni, which was postponed due to off-the-pitch incidents at Balaka Stadium on Saturday, grossed K1,299,310.
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Treasurer, Tiya Somba Banda, confirmed that Wanderers and Mzuni received K200,939 each.
Sulom and Football Association of Malawi pocketed K300,939 each whereas Balaka Stadium got K200,939 as ground levy.
Malawi National Council of Sports received K40,187 whereas St Johns Ambulance were paid K20,000.
Banda hailed football supporters that paid to watch the game. The match was postponed after Mzuni fled the venue after being attacked by fans linked to Wanderers. The Nomads have distanced themselves from the incident.
“In most cases, supporters riot upon learning that a game has been postponed. However, these supporters were different. They did not riot, let alone demand their money back. We salute them for understanding the situation,” he said.
He added that the gross could have been more if the gates were left open.
“Upon realising that the game might not take place, major stakeholders opted to close the stadium until the issue was resolved. If people were allowed to pay, then the amount could have been more but we didn’t want to take chances,” he said.
