Potipher Chidaya burial Monday

The body of late Potipher Chidaya, long-time administrative secretary for the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), will be laid to rest Monday at Area 18 cemetery in Lilongwe.

Chidaya died on Saturday from an asthma attack at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

A sombre mood engulfed the deceased’s home at Biwi in Lilongwe, where a vigil is being held before burial.

Some of the notable persons that went to condole the bereaved family were Leader of Opposition, who is also MCP president, Lazarus Chakwera, and former speaker of the National Assembly Louis Chimango.

One of the family members, Gideon Mdzinga, said Chidaya’s death is a big shock and loss to the family as he was a pillar and vessel of wisdom.

“He has been everything to us; we don’t know how we are going to survive without him. Many of us looked up to him whenever we were in need [of something]or stuck in different ways. It’s a big shock to us,” Mdzinga said.

“He was a dedicated and loyal man. By the time we changed to multiparty system, he chose to remain with the party and he has died in the party. We have lost a very important person who served as our institution memory,” he said

Chidaya started as a civil servant during Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s administration before he was seconded to MCP office.

He is survived by a wife, seven children and five grandchildren.

He came from Mlenga Village, Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe.
