Premier Bet Wizards pulled a surprise of the weekend when beating Civo United 1-0 in a tightly contested TNM Super League match played in the scorching heat of Saturday afternoon at Surestream Stadium in Chilomoni Township, Blantyre.
Despite a Carlsberg Cup fiesta, between Be Forward Wanderers and Silver Strikers, taking place at giant Kamuzu Stadium, some fans still made their way to the former MDC Stadium to witness the league encounter.
The game started off on a faster tempo with the Wizards playing their usual trademark menacing passing football, but it was not long before Civo found their feet.
Eventually, the anticipation of the showcase to be a thriller was eroded as both teams started to play purposeless football that only resulted into half chances.
Overall, the first half affair turned out to be a ‘boring’ episode as both teams seemed to lack that electric spark to ignite the excitement.
As fans thought the match was bound for a stalemate, a key moment to unlock the treasure chest arrived in the 87th minute when Wizards’ striker, Patrick Phiri, was fouled in the penalty box to earn a penalty.
Bernard Chimaimba ably converted from the spot to give the Wizards a 1-0 win and with it, take the team’s tally to 15 points while rising from position 14 to 12. Civo are 11th with 17 points.
