President Lazarus Chakwera led Malawians in congratulating the Flames for qualifying for Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals to be staged in Cameroon next year.

In his congratulatory message through Press Secretary Brian Banda, Chakwera pledged to host the Flames soon.

“His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, sends his congratulations to the Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, for their victory against Uganda and for qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. The President and the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, wish the Flames every success in their subsequent games,” the statement reads.

It was the third time for Malawi to qualify for the continental showpiece, the first being in 1984 in Ivory Coast and 2010 in Angola.

South Africa’s Premiership side Baroka striker Richard Mbulu scored the priceless goal in the 15th minute when he headed in a well taken cross from defender Stanley Sanudi.

National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) also joined the rest of Malawians in congratulating the team.

“We would like to congratulate the Flames, Meck Mwase and his entire technical panel for qualifying for Afcon finals. We are proud of Mwase and he has proved that local coaches have potential,” reads the statement from NFCA signed by General Secretary Davie Mpima.

The Flames finished second in Group B with 10 points from six matches, two points behind Burkina Faso, who defeated South Sudan 1-0 on the same day to maintain top spot.

In the qualifiers, Malawi chalked three victories, two losses and one draw having defeated S. Sudan home and away but lost to Burkina Faso and Uganda in two consecutive away matches.
