President Peter Mutharika appoints two new judges
President Peter Mutharika has appointed two new High Court judges.
According to a statement from Chief Secretary to Government, Lloyd Muhara, released Monday, the judges are Jack N’riva and Thomson Ligowe.
The statement says the appointments are with effect from June 29, 2017.
Until his appointment, N’riva was the Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal while Ligowe was Chief Resident Magistrate based in Blantyre.
Human rights activist, Billy Mayaya, has welcomed the appointments but was quick to point out that the appointments should not be based on regional lines.
“Government appointment should be diversified, and should consider other people from all the regions. It is my prayer that the appointed judges will not succumb to government pressure when it comes to delivering justice,” Mayaya said.
In less than a year, the country has lost two High Court judges, George Bakuwa who collapsed in Zambia in November last year and Nyakwawa Usiwausiwa who died in a road accident in Lilongwe two months ago.
