Prisoners starved over official’s visit

Inmates at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre on Wednesday spent the whole day without eating because a commissioner from the Malawi Prison Service (MPS) was visiting the prison.
The Daily Times found dozens of relatives of the prisoners outside the prison gates, with food baskets in their hands, waiting to feed their imprisoned relations.
At around 3pm, other people were seen going back home with the food, after waiting for close to eight hours, from 8 o’clock in the morning.
One of the relatives told The Daily Times that she got soaked in rains earlier while waiting to give her husband food.
“The waiting shade was full. Some of us were forced to stand in the rain. We were told the official’s visit would not take long but it took the whole day”, said the relative.
rison refused to comment on why the prisoners were starved while their relatives were forced to wait for hours on end.
Malawi Prisons Service spokesperson, Smart Maliro, could not be reached to comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, around 3:30pm, the relatives were seen scrambling for space at the gate after the commissioner had finally left
