Professionals on Tanzania trip

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, has said foreign-based players are expected to join Malawi National Football Team camp on Monday ahead of the trip to Tanzania for a friendly match.

“Following the technical panel’s recommendation, we have released names of foreign-based players who will be part of the trip to Tanzania,” Gunda said.

The Flames date the Taifa Stars on October 7 to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group B qualifiers against Morocco, Cameroon and Comoros next March.

Malawi started the qualifiers with a 1-0 home win over Comoros in June whereas Cameroon defeated Morocco 2-1. Only group winners will qualify for the Afcon finals.

The Flames Coach, Ronny van Geneugden, has maintained the players who made the trip to Morocco recently.

The foreign-based players include Mozambique-based goalkeeper Charles Swini, midfielder Frank Banda (HCB Songo), striker Richard Mbulu (Costa do Sol) and winger John Banda (Ferroviario de Nampula).

South Africa-based defender Limbikani Mzava of Golden Arrows, Bidvest Wits’ striker Gabadinho Mhango, attacker Gerard Phiri junior, Platinum Stars’ midfielder Robert Ng’ambi and Zambia-based winger Dalitso Sailesi have been called up.

Last month, the Flames drew 1-1 against Morocco Under-23 before beating Togo 1-0 in Morocco.

Meanwhile, van Geneugden has made a late inclusion in the squad of Be Forward Wanderers right-winger Felix Zulu.

The Flames Assistant Coach, Gerard Phiri senior, confirmed that the coaching panel was impressed with Zulu’s performance in the TNM Super League game against Blantyre United at Chilomoni Stadium on Sunday.

“He is good, and with time, he will be one of the best attackers on the land,” Phiri said.
