Property owners start demolishing red star-marked buildings

Blantyre City Council (BCC) has said some property owners whose buildings were marked for demolition in the Red Star Campaign have started pulling them down and erecting new structures.

The red star campaign has been facing resistance from some proper ty owners who cite financial problems as one of the factors for their failure to demolish buildings that pose danger to life and property.

BCC spokesperson, Anthony Kasunda, said, after inspecting buildings in both in Blantyre and Limbe, they discovered that some property owners have complied with the recommendation and are pulling down old structures and putting up new ones.

“The issue was not about the council taking a bulldozer and demolishing the structures as if we were putting up a new town. We have been inspecting [structures in] Limbe and Blantyre and are happy that some property owners are pulling down old structures and are putting up new ones according to our recommendations,” he said.

Kasunda said other property owners have made a commitment to erect new structures in the long run.

The development comes against the background that 54 property owners obtained a court injunction and the issue is still in the court.

“The case of the 54 property owners who obtained a court injunction is still in court. We cannot push them. We cannot do anything but wait until the court case is resolved,” Kasunda said.
