PSL awards elude Malawians

No Malawian footballer has been nominated for 15 categories of South Africa Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) awards for any of the 2015/16 season, an indication of the Flames stars’ struggles.

Malawi has eight footballers spread across PSL and First Division sides, but most of them struggled for game-time last season with the likes of Micium Mhone’s Jomo Cosmos were relegated, whereas University of Pretoria’s survival hangs on the thin thread of play-offs.

In contrast, the short-listed include foreigners such as Zambian Collins Mbesuma, who is PSL Golden Boot Award-designate winner following his exploits at Mpumalanga Black Aces, where he plays alongside Flames skipper Limbikani Mzava.

Zimbabwean Khama Billiat of Mamelodi Sundowns is also a favourite for Player of the Season Award.

The other categories include Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament, First Division top scorer, MTN Last Man Standing, Multichoice Diski Challenge Player of the Tournament, Absa Premiership Goal of the Season, Absa Premiership Defender of the Season, Absa Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, Absa Premiership Footballer of the Season, Nedbank Cup Young Player of the Season and Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament.

Malawians playing in the PSL, which also include the First Division, are Frank Gabadinho Mhango (Golden Arrows), Esau Kanyenda (Polokwane City), Limbikani Mzava (Aces), Harry Nyirenda (Black Aces, Atusaye Nyondo (University of Pretoria), Robin Ngalande (Platinum Stars, Micium Mhone (Jomo Cosmos) and Robert Ng’ambi (Platinum Stars).
