Public Affairs Committee to decide on dialogue

Public Affairs Committee (Pac) has said following meetings which the quasi-religious grouping has been holding, the mediators would determine whether to proceed meeting President Peter Mutharika.
Pac Executive Director, Robert Phiri, on Saturday said, based on what has been discussed, the mediators might go back to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to align some outcomes with those of UTM.
“Following our meeting with UTM and MCP, the mediators will determine whether to proceed with APM meeting or wait a bit and figure out how to reach out to Mec Chairperson Jane Ansah. There could be even a situation where could go back to MCP to align a few outcomes from UTM meeting,” Phiri said.
Last week, MCP president Lazarus Chakwera told Pac to tell Mutharika that the country needs long lasting solution to the political impasse.
On Friday, UTM vice president Michael Usi told The Daily Times that party made demands which need to be taken on board when Pac presents its findings to Mutharika.
“We have had a fruitful meeting with Pac and we have made our demands that need to be considered during their presentation to Professor Peter Mutharika. This country needs long lasting solutions, not piecemeal solutions,”Usi said.
However, Pac chairperson for the special committee on the dialogue, Archbishop Thomas Msusa, assured the delegation that they have always believed in dialogue and peace.
Pac has been undertaking the dialogue based on discussions it had with Mutharika to find ways of ending the impasse in the aftermath of May 21 tripartite elections results which MCP and UTM are disputing.
