By Lasten Kunkeyani:

Pump Aid Beyond Water last week donated items worth K14.4 million to floods survivors in Phalombe and Chikwawa districts.

The relief items include flour and groceries and were donated to people of Traditional Authority (TA) Phweremwe and Group Village Headman Kutulo 1’s areas.

Pump Aid Beyond Water Managing Director Elias Chimulambe said their gesture was in response to a call made by President Lazarus Chakwera, who declared some districts disaster areas.

“This storm has really brought misery to the people of Chikwawa and Phalombe. For example, the people are getting water from unprotected sources. So we have brought Chlorine for them to treat their drinking water. Their houses have also collapsed”, Chimulambe said.

Phalombe District Commissioner (DC) Rodrick Mateauma thanked Pump Aid Beyond Water for the donation, saying people in the area were in desperate need of assistance.

He, however, advised the people not to sell the items.

Mateauma also appealed to other well wishers to come forward with more support.

Fanny Khuwali, a beneficiary from T/A Phweremwe in Phalombe District, thanked Pump Aid Beyond Water for the support.

“The items I have received will help me a lot in my family since I had nothing,” she said.

Chikwawa DC Ali Phiri said the cyclone brought about a devastating impact in the district.

“A lot of houses, public infrastructures like schools, bridges and roads have been damaged in the district and we need more help,” he said.

Pump Aid Beyond Water is working in Kasungu, Mchinji, Lilongwe, Phalombe, Zomba, Mulanje and Chikwawa districts.

About 1.5 million people are supported in these districts with wash– up facilities.
