Celebrated poet Q Malewezi performed virtually at the opening ceremony of the 26th edition of this year’s Poetry Africa in South Africa, which runs from October 6 to 16.
The performance at Poetry Africa, spearheaded by University of Kwazulu- Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts and pre-recorded, acted as a warm-up for the Lilongwe-based poet who is expected to participate at the Requiem for Justice 2022 in Mexico from October 27 to 30.
Apart from this year’s virtual performance, Q’s other Poetry Africa tours include the Malawi leg and 2014 Poetry Africa Festival.
“I did not manage to watch it as I was flying to South Africa when the event was happening but the feedback I have got from friends is overwhelming,” Q said yesterday.
He said he was processing a visa for Mexico as he gears to represent the country at Requiem for Justice 2022.
A letter from Landscapes of Hope signed by Mariam Metwally said recently that Requiem for Justice combines two formats: festival and an advocacy campaign.
It said the event is part of the Landscapes of Hope programme, one of the main programmes of Action for Hope. The event was presented online in 2020 and 2021, with digital contributions by artists, writers, academics and thinkers from more than 20 countries.
