Queens coach in selection headache
Malawi Queens coach Peace Chawinga-Kalua says competition for places in the squad is stiff ahead of the Diamond Challenge set for South Africa next week.
Chawinga-Kalua said despite camping late, the players were determined to make it into the squad.
“Of course, we are already late we can’t cry over split milk. We should thank Airtel Money national netball trophy because the payers are in the right shape. The fight for places is very stiff and it would be difficult to name the final squad,” she said.
The coach is expected to announce the squad tomorrow evening before the team leaves for South Africa on Sunday.
Queens have sour Diamond Challenge outing when they suffered a final humiliating defeat. In 2013, Queens started the Diamond Challenge strongly after beating South Africa in the opening game but they lost the final match to Spar Proteas to finish as runners-up.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) president, Rose Chinunda, said the association was yet to decide whether the team should proceed to Namibia for Africa Netball Championship.
Queens are also expected to take part in the Africa Netball Championship and try to reclaim the title they surrendered on home soil in 2013 after going down to South Africa.
“Hopefully, the decision will be made by Friday after consulting all stakeholders, but as of now, we can’t commit anything,” Chinunda said.
