Queens, England in warm up games
By Mphatso Malidadi:
Malawi national netball team face England tomorrow in a test match ahead of the Fast5 Netball World Series’ throw off at Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) General Secretary, Carol Bapu, who has not travelled with the Queens to Australia, confirmed that they have secured the game to prepare the team for the two-day competition.
“The friendly is ideal for the Queens as they will gauge their performance before the main competition starts,” she said.
Bapu said the coaching panel and players are determined to impress after the Queens finished on sixth place during last year’s event.
The Queens are without top shooter Mwawi Kumwenda of Australia’s Melbourne Vixens as she is injured.
The Queens will play the opening match against Australia on Saturday at 4.45am, hoping to replicate the form of 2016 when they finished on third position.
Meanwhile, MultiChoice Malawi Marketing Manager, Chimwemwe Nyirenda, has announced that all Fast5 matches, also to involve South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and England, will be beamed live on SuperSport television.
Although the Fast5 is not used for world netball rankings, it is a huge opportunity for the Queens to redeem themselves after poor results registered this year.
“We are happy, once again, to beam all matches live from Australia. We are more pleased that, this year, we will beam the Fast5 Netball Tournament to all DStv customers from DStv Access. We will broadcast the matches in standard definition on SuperSport 9 and in high definition on SuperSport 10,” Nyirenda says in a statement.
