Queens go for non-residential training

By Mphatso Malidadi:

Malawi national netball team Coach, Griffin Saenda, has called 20 players to start non-residential training ahead of the World Cup set for Liverpool, England, from July 12 to 21.

Blue Eagles Sisters goal defender, Maggie Sikwese, is the only new face in the squad.

Several key players, including Manchester Thunder shooter Joyce Mvula and Tigresses all-rounder Lauren Ngwira, who is on-loan at London Pulse in the United Kingdom, have also made the list.

Australian side Melbourne Vixens shooter, Mwawi Kumwenda, who is recovering from an injury, is not on the list after indicating that doctors advised her to stay out of action for a year.

The development comes a few days after Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) disclosed that it had offered year-long contracts to Saenda and his deputy, Whyte Mulilima.

Saenda has also included skipper Joana Kachilika, Vice Captain Jane Chimaliro, Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda, Caroline Mtukule- Ngwira, Sindie Simtowe- Msowoya, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango and Beatrice Mpinganjira.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said players would train within their regions before embarking on full-time camping.

“Our leagues are currently on off-season and we want the players to gain fitness. Our coach is taking charge in the South whereas the vice is drilling Central Region players. We have also assigned some people to monitor players in the Northern Region,” Bapu said.

She did not disclose when the squad would start full-time training as the association was waiting for funds from the government.
