They may have returned home with a humiliating seventh-place finish but the Malawi national netball team, the Queens, have made it into the 2018 Commonwealth Games best moments in Australia.
According to the Games’ website, gc2018.com, Malawi are on the list courtesy of their shock 57-53 win over New Zealand’s Silver Ferns.
“Malawi registered the nation’s first-ever win against New Zealand, sparking wild celebrations after the upset 57-53 result. The Malawi Queens’ victory was their first success against two-time Commonwealth champions, New Zealand, in 10 attempts,” reads a report released after the Games’ closing ceremony on Sunday.
The Queens’ victory was dramatic as they trailed by seven goals at half-time, but went on to set up their famous victory with a 17-9 third-quarter lead over New Zealand.
“We have beaten the untouchables,” the Queens’ Coach, Whyte Mulilima, was quoted as saying.
Kukoma Diamonds Chairperson, Isaac Chimwala, said it was only befitting for the organisers to place the Malawi- New Zealand game among the competition’s best moments, considering the Queens’ earlier losses to eventual champions England and Uganda.
“It is just phenomenal to have the Queens in the Games’ best moments. We should build on that result to achieve more. New Zealand have always been on top of the world game and our win should give us the confidence to continue fighting,” he said.
