Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) requires about K200 million to enable the Malawi National Netball Team to take part in two international competitions.
The Queens are expected to participate in the Fast5 Netball World Series at Christchurch in New Zealand from November 11 to 12.
Malawi will also take part in the Africa Netball Championship in Gaborone, Botswana, from November 26 to December 6.
Nam General Secretary Isaac Chimwala said the association needs about K100 million for each tournament, which amounts to K200 million for both competitions.
Chimwala said Nam has been consulting the government, through the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), on financial assistance.
“We exhausted our funding. We are hopeful that the government through [MNCS] will help us,” he said.
The council’s public relations and communications officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said they will make their position clear once Nam submits its budget.
“At this moment, Nam exhausted its allocation. We will consider their request when we receive it. ,” he said.
The Queens reached a new low after finishing seventh at the 2023 Netball World Cup finals in Cape Town, South Africa, which ended on August 6.
This was the Queens’ worst finish at the world showpiece in 20 years, having been stuck on position six on three occasions; that is, in 2011, 2015 and 2019.
Despite finishing seventh at the finals, the Queens maintained their slot on latest world rankings released on September 22.
World champions Australia top the rankings while New Zealand are second followed by England on third and Jamaica on fourth.
South Africa are Africa’s highest-ranked team on fifth while Uganda, who defeated both South Africa and Malawi, have displaced fast improving Tonga Nation on seventh.
