Queens squad leaked
Controversy threatens to spoil morale of Malawi national netball team players after it emerged that the Queens’ travelling squad, to two major events, was leaked before its official release this evening.
The Queens are expected to leave for New Zealand on Saturday to participate in Taini Jameson Trophy from March 21 to 24, before proceeding to Australia for the Commonwealth Games to run from April 5 to 16.
However, there is a squad circulating on social media, purportedly showing that Tigresses duo Grace Mwaful irwa-Mhango and Beatrice Mpinganjira have been dropped.
Other notable faces that have been chopped include Rose Mkanda of Civonets and Kukoma Diamonds shooter Alinafe Kamwala.
According to the list, the Queens Coach, Griffin Saenda, has picked the likes of Mwawi Kumwenda, Joyce Mvula, Jane Chimaliro, Joana Kachilika, Martha Dambo, Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira, Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda, Thandie Galeta and Bridget Kumwenda, Lauren Ngwira, Takondwa Lwazi and Bridget Kumwenda-Chalera.
Saenda said he was equally upset with the development because the squad that was submitted was a provisional one.
“I thought it was a matter between us and the organisers. We were assured that we would be allowed to make changes to the provisional squad. I wanted to change two players by among others, including Grace Mwafulirwa, because she has been terrific. But the organisers are yet to respond,” he said.
A former national netball team player, who did not want to be mentioned, questioned the arrangement.
“This is an act of betrayal because some players were giving out their all during training, only to learn that they were not part of the squad. It raises questions on whether the squad has, indeed, been picked on merit,” she said.
