The Queens are preparing for their participation in Vitality Netball World Cup set to run from July 12 to 21 in Liverpool, England.

Malawi’s reputation as one of the best netballing nations has been thrown off balance following the latest International Netball Federation rankings which saw the Queens slump to position nine from sixth out of 42 teams in the world.

Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said the Quad Series would help the Queens gain more points and fine-tune for the World Cup.

“Currently, the Queens are camping in Manchester but they will proceed to Cardiff to play in Quad Series against Wales, Barbados and Northern Ireland. The series have been organised by Wales,” she said.

Malawi would then travel to Liverpool on July 9 ahead of the World Cup opening match against fourth-ranked New Zealand on July 12.

Meanwhile, former Queens Captain Emmie Waya-Chongwe, who skippered the side for 10 years, said while it was commendable for the Queens to play in the Quad Series, there was need to play against top sides.

“It is very encouraging that the team will finally play some test matches before the actual World Cup because this will give them room to gauge their strengths and weaknesses,” Waya-Chongwe said.

“However, in terms of rankings, Malawi will gain more points by playing against Northern Ireland but will get little in matches against Wales and Barbados because they are below the Queens on rankings.”
