Queens’ wait for permanent coach continues

NEED PERMANENT COACH—Queens after finishing second at Africa Netball championship

AT THE HELM—Chawinga-Kaluwa (2nd left) mentors a developmental side

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) efforts to hire a permanent national netball team coach is facing hitches as the government is yet to consider its proposal.

Nam is hoping to emulate Football Association of Malawi (Fam) by having a full time coach on the government’s payroll.

Currently, First Choice Tigresses mentor, Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa, was offered a three-year contract to head the national netball team coaching panel.

Under the present condition, the national netball coach is only entitled to game and training allowances whenever the Queens are preparing and competing. This is unlike, the national football coach who gets his salary monthly and other benefits for being a full time.

Ministry of Sports Spokesperson, Simon Bvundula, said Nam’s proposal was yet to be discussed.

“A decision is yet to be made as discussions have not yet commenced. We need to consult thoroughly before beginning the exercise. As it is, I can’t say when the exercise will begin,” he said.

Nam president Khungekile Matiya and general secretary, Carol Bapu did not pick our calls.

However, Serenity Stars chairperson Dalitso Chinyama, said the Queens deserve a full time coach to reach greater heights.

“This is one of the areas which we need to improve. A full time coach will be focused to develop the team in particular and the sport in general. It is my hope that the government will consider hiring a full time coach. The Queens bring good results during international tournaments so the team must be supported in different areas including hiring of a permanent coach.

Netball is one of the most followed sporting activities in the country besides football.

The Queens are rated third in Africa and seventh in the world.
