Questions over reforms report secrecy

Gift Trapence

Billy Mayaya

By Deogratias Mmana:

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has asked government to make public the Public Sector Reforms report which Vice President Saulos Chilima presented to President Lazarus Chakwera.

HRDC’s call comes after Chilima changed plans despite earlier in the week telling Malawians that the official presentation would be public.

“However, while we celebrate this milestone, we are disappointed by the privacy surrounding the presentation of this highly anticipated report to President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace,” reads a statement from HRDC, signed by chairperson Gift Trapence and coordinators Billy Mayaya and Masauko Thawe.

HRDC reminds Chakwera and Chilima that access to information is now a public right as per Section 37 of the Constitution as read with the Access to Information Act.

Press Secretary Brian Banda refused to comment when asked on the nature of the report.
