The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 has questioned the resumption of the 2021 TNM Super League season, saying it was done without its consent.

“The Taskforce has learnt with concern plans by the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) to resume Super League games over the Easter weekend. The decision to resume games was made without prior approval of the Taskforce nor any government ministry.

“The decision was also made in spite of the speech of His Excellency the State President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera made on 28th March 2021 which clearly outlined that Covid-19 restrictions need to be observed over the Easter weekend and may be relaxed later when epidemic indicators reach the set thresholds,” reads a letter dated April 1, 2021 which is jointly signed by Minister of Health Khumbize Kandondo Chiponda and Co- Taskforce Chairperson Wilfred Chalamira Nkhoma.

Furthermore, the taskforce clarified that the special exemption granted to allow the Malawi National Football Team to prepare and participate in the just ended 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers did not extend to other football games nor sporting activities.

Super League of Malawi president Tiya Somba Banda did not pick our calls while Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Walter Nyamilandu was unreachable.

The letter has been addressed to Sulom and copied to Fam, Malawi National Council of Sports and the leagues sponsor-TNM.

It remains to be seen if the games will continue today.

Meanwhile, Mighty Wanderers have two tricky assignments in the TNM Super League in the Northern Region this weekend.

The Nomads will meet second-placed Ekwendeni Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium this afternoon before wrapping up with Moyale Barracks at the same venue tomorrow.

Before the break in January, Hammers were in form and claimed vital results including a 1-0 victory over Silver Strikers.

In other matches today, Blue Eagles will be in action against Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium whereas Karonga United host Mafco at Karonga Ground.

TNM Super League defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets host Mzuzu Warriors at Kamuzu Stadium.
