It was a rainy day in the Capital City yesterday and the pitch was waterlogged. Even the fans in the open stands endured heavy downpour.
But Chimwemwe Idana was brave as he scored the lone goal of the match to inspire Nyasa Big Bullets to a hard fought 1-0 victory over Silver Strikers at a waterlogged Silver Stadium pitch.
Substitute Fischer Kondowe snatched a ball from Silver’s defender Mark Fodya before laying a beautiful pass to Idana who was at the right place to beat goalkeeper Charles Thom.
The goal sent Bullets fans into ecstasy as it was a nervous match coupled with a bad playing condition due to heavy down pour.
The win was big relief for Bullets as they maintained top spot on the log table and took a bold step towards defending the TNM Super League championship this season.
It was the first time Bullets have collected maximum points in Lilongwe this season.
Bullets have 61 points with three games remaining, one point above Be Forward Wanderers who defeated Karonga United 2-1 at Kamuzu Stadium.
Substitute Zicco Mkanda scored the opener for Wanderers before Peter Cholopi scored the second goal but Misheck Selemani netted the consolation for the visitors.
Both Bullets and Wanderers have midweek games. Bullets will face Civil Sporting Club at Civo whereas Wanderers will host Mighty Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
At Silver Stadium, Bullets showed great character and coach Kalisto Pasuwa made a tactical change in the second half when he brought experienced legs of Kondowe and Chiukepo Msowoya for Luke Chima and Righteous Banda.
Silver only made one change the entire match when they brought in Mphatso Philimon for Thuso Paipi.
But Bullets were lucky to get out with full points as Michael Tetteh missed a golden opportunity towards the end of the match.
The match was never short of drama as the second half was delayed for some minutes as referee Alfred Chilinda was assessing the condition of the pitch.
Bullets players were reluctant to resume the match after the break but the match went on.
After the match, Silver assistant coach Abasi Makawa said his players did not play their usual game due to the condition of the pitch.
“It was tough for the players to play and we played like ping pong football. It is sad that we lost but we should not blame anyone,” he said.
Pasuwa gave credit to his players for collecting maximum points.
“The players showed great character and the most important thing was three points. But the pitch made life difficult for us and it was not health for the players,” he said.
In other games on Sunday, Blue Eagles returned to winning ways after thrashing Chitipa United 4-0 at Nankhaka Stadium with goals from Foster Biton, Grant Zakumbuyo, Micium Mhone and Schumacher Kuwali.
