Raiply National Volleyball Trophy national finals are on this afternoon as teams in both the men’s and the women’s categories battle for the top prize at Katoto Secondary School Sports Grounds in Mzuzu.
Games commenced on Friday with the three regional leagues sending their representatives to the three-day event.
The winner in the men’s category will pocket K600,000, gold medals and a floating trophy while half the amount and silver medals will go to the runners-up.
The third-place play-off winners will pocket K200,000 and bronze medals with some K100,000 being earmarked for the forth-placed team.
The ladies’ category has K500,000 for the winner on top of gold medals and a floating trophy.
The losing finalist will go home with K260,000 and silver medals, with K160,000 and bronze medals set aside for the winner of the third place play-of.
The forth-placed team will pocket K80,000 as the rest of the other teams are guaranteed a consolation of K20,000 each.
Volleyball Association of Malawi General Secretary, Jairos Nkhoma, said winners in both categories will represent Malawi at this year’s Zone VI Senior Volleyball Club Championship in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, early December.
“We are encouraging teams to start preparations now. Zimbabwe is not very far from Malawi, so we expect teams to go and represent us there. We missed the event last year in Namibia but we should not miss this one,” Nkhoma said.
