RETURNS AT NATIONAL LEVEL—Volleyball action

Volleyball action at national level is scheduled to return this month-end after a long break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The government announced a ban on all sports activities on March 21 through a declaration of a state of disaster aimed at stopping the spread of the virus.

Sports action has since been allowed to return after the easing of cases across the country.

Volleyball Association of Malawi General Secretary, Jairos Nkhoma, said they were pleased to resume activities after more than eight months of inactivity.

Nkhoma said their first activity would be the K5 million Raiply Trophy which will involve 20 teams at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu.

“We are pleased to notify the volleyball family that we are back at national level from this month-end. Our sponsor Raiply has been kind enough to bankroll the competition despite facing various challenges due to Covid-19,” he said.

Nkhoma said the men’s and ladies’ categories would contribute 10 teams each to the competition which will throw off on November 27.

“The competition will run up to November 29. Hosts Northern Region Volleyball League will be represented by four teams in the men’s category and the same number in the ladies’ category. This means the South and the Centre will contribute three teams each in either category,” he said.

Nkhoma said all participating teams would pay a registration fee of K20,000 each.

The competition’s winner in both the men’s and ladies’ categories will pocket K700,000 with the runner up receiving K300,000.

The third-placed team will get K200,000 while the team to finish on position four will bank K100,000.

There will also be individual prizes for the best spiker, best setter, best receiver and both blocker.
