Police in Mangochi say they are still investigating circumstances relating to the death of two children, aged five and six, who were on Friday evening found dead inside a stationary vehicle belonging to a businessman at Makawa Trading Centre in the district.
Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Roderick Maida, said the owner of the vehicle, Idrissa Wasi, is currently in police custody for possible homicide charges.
“Reports from some community members indicate that the two deceased children, who were staying close to the suspect’s house, went missing on Thursday afternoon. Their parents and neighbours searched but could not find them.
“The children were found dead a day later inside one of the vehicles belonging to Wasi which was at his house,” Maida said.
He added that this angered the members of the community who suspected foul play and went ahead to damage Wasi’s five vehicles apart from setting three houses on fire.
Maida said police officers were called to control the situation and prevent further damage to property and loss of life. At that time, Wasi had reportedly fled the area while his wife was whisked away by well-wishers who handed her to the police.
Maida said the law enforcers are waiting for a postmortem report from Mangochi District Hospital to establish the cause of the death of the two children.
“We have also assigned police investigators to look into the whole incident because there are conflicting reports which are coming out such that we cannot conclude whether the two were murdered,” he said.
