Rebirth of Lions

TNM Super League returnees Red Lions are set to commence preparations for 2020 season today at Cobbe Barracks ground in Zomba.
Lion’s Coach, Nelson Chirwa, said they will play friendly games with lower league sides to scout players to strengthen the side ahead of life in the top league.
“We are starting preparations earlier so that we should assemble a competitive squad capable of withstanding the heat of Super League football. We are targeting to sign eight youthful players whom we will blend with our experienced players,” he said.
Chirwa called on players who feel can make the grade at the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) owned outfit to undergo trials.
The Lion’s coach said the team’s management was yet to decide which home ground to use in absence of Zomba Community.
Previously, Lions were either using Mangochi or Balaka stadiums.
Meanwhile, Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Vice General Secretary, Kingsley Simbeye said the association pledged to help the team by identifying potential players to undergo trials.
“We already called the team’s officials to a meeting where we encouraged them to work hard in the new season,” he said.
Simbeye said fired up by Lions’ promotion, the league intends to have seven teams in the Super League next year.
“We plan to have seven teams in the Super League from the southern region. We can only achieve this if promoted teams from our lower league are not relegated once they are promoted to the country’s top elite league,” Simbeye said.
Lions were promoted back to the Super League after amassing 100 points in 38 games to emerge 2019 Thumbs up Premier Division champions.
