Reconstitute Cabinet—Pac

Lazarus Chakwera

Quasi-religious group Public Affairs Committee (Pac) Wednesday asked President Lazarus Chakwera to reconstitute his Cabinet, reduce its size and clear perceptions of nepotism.

According to a statement which Pac released Wednesday, its chairperson Patrick Thawale asked Chakwera to trim the Cabinet as a bloated one exerted pressure on Malawi’s meagre resources.

“The size of the Cabinet might have made sense at first as you assumed power as an alliance – but now, with this economic hardship, the status quo might not be in sync with people’s expectations and economic hardships,” the statement reads.

The development comes at a time ministries such as those of Energy, Labour, Local Government and Transport have no senior ministers after occupants either passed on or were fired.

“Faced with lack of clarity on Malawi’s political governance following inaction on crucial political decisions, several stakeholders have voiced their frustrations and have failed to appreciate your leadership style. The debate on the inaction has focused on the failure to reshuffle the Cabinet as pledged last year; maintaining the same big size of the Cabinet, and reversing your positions on some crucial decisions that provided a ray of hope for enforcement in Malawi,” the statement adds.

Pac spokesperson Bishop Gilford Matonga told The Daily Times Wednesday that they have an open invitation with Chakwera, enabling the committee to engage the President on issues when the need arises.

Among other things, Pac also urged the President to do something about rising prices of fertiliser.
