Red Lions back on top

Red Lions reclaimed top spot in the TNM Super League after coming from behind to win 3-2 against resilient Karonga United at Balaka Stadium.

The Zomba-based soldiers found themselves at the summit of the log table at the end of week one, with four points from two away games played at Chitowe in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota District.

But on Saturday, defending champions Be Forward Wanderers overtook them after their 1-0 win over Masters Security which saw them garner six points from two games.

Red Lions had the opportunity to upstage Wanderers who were not in action yesterday.

They grabbed the chance with both hands when they came from behind to beat Karonga United 3-2 in a tight match.

Pearson Panje opened the scoring for Lions but Karonga equalised through Anthony Mfune.

The visitors went on to take the lead through Precious Wachali and threatened to collect full points from their second consecutive match in the Southern Region.

But Moses Nankumba equalised to ease the pressure on the soldiers, before Matthews Simbeye grabbed the winning goal late in the second half.

Lions Team Manager, Nelson Banda, warned that his team has taken off and will not relent in its quest to fight for the title this season.

“We did our homework after a dismal performance last season. It was embarrassing to be in the group of teams that were fighting relegation. So we learnt our lessons and assembled a good team that will take us all the way,” Banda said.

His Karonga United counterpart, Kondwani Mwalweni, partly blamed the defeat on fatigue as his players had faced Nchalo United on Saturday.

“Fatigue took its toll on our players after the long trip. But in all fairness, the referee was biased. We even proposed to the match commissioner to replace him in the second half but we were given a deaf ear. Otherwise we played very well,” Mwalweni said, while also warning other teams that they stand no chance of winning in Karonga.

In other games played yesterday, last season’s runners-up, Nyasa Big Bullets, rose to position two after a 2-0 win over Moyale. Henry Kabichi and Bright Munthali scored a goal each.
