Red Lions coach optimistic

Newly-appointed Red Lions Coach, Nelson Chirwa, has said his charges are now determined to make up for their slip up in TNM Super League second-round.

Battling Lions handed Chirwa a winning start after deservedly beating Premier Bet Wizards 2-0 at Chilomoni Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

Chirwa, who had a stint with Lions as an assistant coach, having also coached Cobbe Barracks, was appointed to stop the team’s poor run of form, following the firing of Mike Kumanga and his deputy Pritchard Mwansa.

Under the tutelage of Chirwa and Yohane Fulaye, Lions did not disappoint as Benesi Kayisi and Mathews Simbeye scored in either half of the match against Wizards.

Chirwa said he hoped the win would inspire the team to win more games.

“The boys did a fantastic job. We changed some things and told them to believe in themselves. The win is crucial and it will inspire us to move up the [log] table,” he said.

Wizards acting Coach, Simeon Kapuza, said they were sailing through troubled waters.

“Honestly, our survival is no longer in our hands,” he said.

The Lions are on position 13 with 27 points from 25 games whereas Wizards are on 14th place with 23 points from 27 games.

Another struggling side, Blantyre United, who lost to Blue Eagles 1-0 courtesy of Stuart Mbunge’s goal on Saturday, remain on position 15 with 20 points from 26 games.

Chitipa United anchor the table and their fate seems to have been sealed by events elsewhere.

Chitipa have 16 points from 27 games, and if they win their remaining three games, they cannot overtake Wizards.
